Task
According to estimates, today almost two-thirds of Ukrainians live in standardized residential buildings that were constructed in large numbers between the 1950s and 1980s. Already, more than 130,000 residential buildings have been destroyed in the ongoing war. As a result, reconstruction will largely focus on the creation of new housing. Much of this rebuilding will also take place in socialist-era mass housing settlements. The similarity and interchangeability of these settlements encourage the idea of treating the design of a replacement building for a destroyed one as a case study.
For this, we turn to Odesa in southern Ukraine, specifically to the socialist large housing estate of Cheryomushki. There, we are designing a new building, which we optimistically call Series 2025.
This endeavor is driven by a defiant optimism as well as a persistent joy in culture and life. Our external perspective is not meant to be one of imperialist know-it-all superiority, but rather a diverse perspective that can give rise to pluralistic and perhaps unexpected questions and answers.
